There is a new wave of cities emerging across Africa. Smart Cities. From Kenya to Nigeria, Utopia to Ghana, Rwanda to Senegal more countries in the region are recording a rise in smart cities.
Smart cities are urban areas that leverage data and digital technology to be more efficient, environmentally friendly, and socially inclusive than βregularβ ones.
Recent studies show that Africa would house the worldβs largest cities by 2100. With claims that the region has the fastest urban growth rate globally, investors are beginning to express optimism about smart cities.
The attempts at creating new cities in Africa stem from two theories: the need for more space for its growing population and the dysfunctional nature of most of its existing cities.Β
