The tipping point ⚖️
Research indicates that there are strong links between security and a country’s development, evidenced since the cold war ended (Nwanegbo and Odigbo, 2013; Chandler, 2007). It is argued that development is stalled and even unattainable in nations with severe conflicts, crises and war.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant and negative impact on the level of peace across the world leading to an increase in violence and conflict.
Closer home, Nigeria faces a plethora of security challenges, including but not limited to violent extremism, farmer-herder conflict, banditry, kidnappings, a revived secessionist movement, piracy and attacks on oil infrastructure. These have resulted in its latest ranking as the 146th least peaceful country among 163 independent nations and territories according to the 2021 Global Peace Index.
In Africa, Nigeria also ranks the eighth least peaceful country after South Sudan, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Central African Republic, Sudan and Mali. Finally, the 2021 Fragile States Index Report ranks Nigeria as the world’s 12th most fragile nation.
Against this backdrop, the Oando Webinar Series 6.0 aims to not just discuss the current state of insecurity but also enable panellists to share proactive strategies to deal with these security issues and threats.
Our belief is that though there is a mandate and role for the government in addressing the nation’s security challenges; the private sector and individuals also have a critical part to play. Our goal is to use this session as a platform to tap into the diverse panels' expertise to put forward practical solutions for all.
