Cybersecurity & Africa's economy 💻🔨
Africa is rapidly evolving in terms of population, economy, and global relevance. Major debates regarding the continent’s digital economy are centred on how quickly it is expanding and how much growth is required. But as the continent gets more wealthy and accelerates digitally, an increase in cyber crimes threatens economic growth.
Although cybercrime is threatening businesses globally, African companies are the most endangered. The continent is relatively limited in terms of communication infrastructure but with the increase in the penetration of technology, it is increasingly becoming a target for cybercriminals due to poor governmental commitment to cybersecurity.
Most economies on the continent lost 10 per cent of their GDPs to it in 2021, while the continent recorded a $4 billion loss - 3.5 per cent of its $115 billion digital economy.
By 2050, analysts predict that Africa’s digital economy would be worth $712 billion. But with the continuous growth in cybercrime, the continent may suffer an estimated loss of about $25 billion by 2050.
What can Africa do to beef up its cyber security? Join us on Wednesday, 21st of September at 4:00 pm WAT, to discuss The impact of cyber insecurity on Africa’s economy.
