Hello Venturer,Everywhere you turn in Africa today, there is a ‘smart’ city project under construction. Smart cities are new types of cities that leverage data and digital technology to offer a new kind of urban life. By design, they are more efficient, conducive and socially inclusive than the ‘regular’ urban city. In Africa, there’s a lot of effort to create these new cities, and also plenty of media hype around them. Smart city projects are emerging across Africa in Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda, and Senegal. Recent studies show that Africa would house the world's largest cities by 2100. With claims that the region has the fastest urban growth rate globally, investors are beginning to express optimism about smart cities. But does Africa need smart cities?
