History as a tool đ ď¸ for growth
Hello Venturer,
"Until the lion has its own storyteller, tales of hunting will always glorify the hunterâ- African Proverb
I first came across this African proverb while reading the revered Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Back in college, my teacher told me that it was a counter-narrative to the distortion of the African image in Joyce Cary's Mister Johnson. Achebe's narrative reconfigured my brain to appreciate the beauty of being African.
Are you wondering if this is a literary class? Well, no.
We are in the 21st century, and we have a young African championing the need to revisit history with her organisation, AFA-AFA (Africans for Africa). This young woman, Kamdi Okonjo, emphasizes the need for Africans to know their past to help fix the present and create a better future.
Kamdi preaches the Ubuntu ideology, "I am because we are." She hopes to unite, educate, uplift, and inspire African youths, equipping them with the tools necessary to create meaningful solutions to the continent's current problems. Read about her and other interesting developments in this issue of VA Weekly.

Kamdi Okonjo â The 20-year-old with a unique approach to solving Africaâs problems
"The #EndSARS movement was a culmination of events that had been ignored from the past. Somebody who does not know their history would not know where it came from. People often solve branches and not the roots of problems, so I think we need to stress the long term effect of learning history by introducing new kinds of topics and new types of solutions. This is exactly what AFA is doing. We want to encourage people to think of things they wouldnât have thought about."Â Read more.
